My name is Julia Seco. I have been a student at UCA Farnham for 4 years and I am on my last year of the Illustration course! You might have seen me around at freshers fairs trying to recruit you for the cheerleading club "Hellcats" or maybe just, well, around. I have been involved with the S.U. for a couple years now, not just as part of a club committee but I was even a trustee during the 2020/2021 academic year.
My main campaign promise is that I want to help build a strong sense of community among UCA students of all campuses. To make a space in which both International and UK students can mix up, share their culture and learn from each other to become truly Global Citizens. A community in which all students, regardless of their identities, can feel welcome and safe. To achieve this, I would like to:
★ Work on hosting more cultural, student led/proposed events. I want students to feel like they can take the initiative when it comes to sharing their culture and customs.
★ Create S.U. Exhibition Spaces on each campus to showcase student work. Students should be able to see themselves reflected around university and there is plenty of blank walls that would benefit from everyone's creativity.
★ Push for better language support for students whose first language is not English, so they can take full advantage of lessons and lectures as well as all the fun cultural exchange that living and studying abroad can offer.
★ Support existing empowering communities like Farnham and Epsom’s Students of Color Community, Epsom’s Chinese Students and Scholars association, Farnham's South Asian Society, Farnham and Epsom’s Disabled Student Community, Epsom’s Women Students Society, Farnham and Epsom’s LGBTQ+ Student Community and Farnham’s Trans and Trans Ally Society.
★ Work together with the university to improve the range of exchange opportunities available to UCA students as well as find ways to make the program more accessible to students.
★ Keep pushing for a less Eurocentric curriculum, with more diverse lecture topics and guest lecturers.
During that year I was also elected Student Governor. Student Governors are representatives of the student body and together with the S.U. Presidents they attend Governor Board meetings, where decisions about the university's future are made. Being there gave an inside into how universities function and the type of changes that can and should happen.
I want to use that knowledge to give everyone at UCA a chance at having the best possible student experience while they are here and to create a place where students can feel accepted, supported and uplifted.

I also believe that the accessibility measures on campus are not enough and the ones that are there don’t always work properly, complicating access to facilities to those students who rely on them. I want to push the University to care for the existing measures better such as making sure automatic doors all work, as well as continue pushing for more, such as water fountains around campus.
On top of that I will continue to support both student led and Union led efforts to prevent, report and stop sexual assault amongst students. This includes making information (about reports, the Angela project etc.) more easily available, becoming more transparent with the student body about how reports and similar procedures are handled within the Union as well as pushing for better, more inclusive, and in-depth consent and sex-ed for the student body.
